While visiting the dying and very wealthy Countess Sophia Alexandra Rhinelander von Stadt in a Main Line rehabilitation center, Jessica Rawlins is startled to hear her Godmother whisper a last request…search and find the secret in the shadows. As executor of her will, Jessica discovers that she must locate documents to authenticate Sophia's true identity. Meanwhile, Jed Watkins, her CIA boss, gives her an assignment she can't refuse...from the President of the United States...an assignment that will require her distinct level of cultural understanding, experience, and endurance; one that will lead her into the treacherous world of black market art stolen by the Nazis during World War II from Jewish families and hidden for decades from public view. While Jessica follows a mysterious trail abroad, cousins Philip and Caroline Rawlins are put in charge of Sophia's estate. But can the pampered Caroline and her elegant husband Philip put aside their Main Line amusements to follow in Jessica's footsteps and help solve the decades-old mysteries involving Sophia, the Nazis, stolen art, and perhaps even Hitler himself?
